Samsung Electronics responded to the array of announcements by chipmakers this week by unveiling an eight-core processor for smartphones, with four of those reserved to extend the battery's life. Stephen Woo, the head of Samsung's System LSI unit, introduced the Exynos 5 Octa. In a speech this week in Las Vegas, Woo also displayed a prototype for a flexible OLED display technology, called Youm. Separately, Samsung said that it was courting smartphone makers in China and other emerging markets to make up for business that it expects to lose from Apple.
