Interest in molecular imaging and the drive to formalize training and standardize requirements for physicians are growing parallel with the surge in the adoption of PET/CT and SPECT/CT, said Dr. Michael Graham, past president of SNMMI. Individual programs are including molecular imaging training in their curriculum, and formalizing training into a four-year program may likely be the next requirement for nuclear medicine training residency programs, Graham said. The push for molecular imaging training also encompasses technologists. The SNMMI Technologist Section wants all new technologists joining the molecular imaging field beginning in 2015 to hold a bachelor's degree because of the complexities involved in molecular imaging procedures.
