China will "use rewards to replace subsidies to fight air pollution in key areas," financing the effort with a $1.6 billion fund, the government said. China separately decided to reduce the amount by which electric-vehicle subsidies will decline this year and next.
A new study suggests that a bad-air alert system may be encouraging Utah residents to drive more on days with poor air quality. The alerts are intended to persuade residents to limit driving on those days, but the proximity of the Wasatch mountain range may be causing people to do just the opposite. "Much of the increases in traffic were ... on roads leading to mountain environments that offer respite from the poor air quality," says the report, whose lead author is Harvey Miller, an Ohio State University geography professor.
Tesoro has reached a $1.1 million settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency over allegations that it violated Clean Air Act standards at its refineries in Alaska, North Dakota, Utah and Washington state. The company allegedly failed to monitor or test fuel production for toxic pollutants. Tesoro said it is addressing the issue.
Converting Canada's plastic waste to fuel with the use of pyrolysis could annually produce nearly 9 million barrels of oil-equivalent hydrocarbons worth roughly $792 million, according to a study commissioned by the Canadian Plastics Industry Association.
