Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin has suggested that schools make algebra and geometry graduation requirements. In 2011, students in grades three through eight posted about 68% proficiency on state math exams, but only 36% of 11th-grade students were considered proficient. The chairman of the state Senate Education Committee says his committee is considering the governor's plan and other proposals to boost math education, noting that a lack of funding can get in the way of education reform.
