The Washington State Board of Education on Wednesday set public hearings for next month over its first draft of rules to govern charter schools since voters approved a referendum in November to allow them in the state. Among other things, the rules create timelines for local school boards to approve new charter schools and outline the annual application and approval process. The board is expected later to set additional rules, including establishing guidelines for closing poor-performing charter schools.
