Plastic surgeons and bioengineers at Cornell University used 3D printing to create an artificial ear that resembles the real thing. The doctors and scientists made a digital 3D image of a human ear, then used 3D printing to make a mold into which they injected a gel scaffold for growing cartilage. Pending preclinical tests, the prosthetic ear could be tried in children with microtia or patients who lose ears to illness or trauma.
