California has abandoned a 15-year policy of expecting eighth-grade students to take Algebra I, a decision made as part of its efforts to implement the Common Core State Standards. Under the new policy, schools will offer two math tracks, one including algebra and one with an alternate course. Supporters of the change say not all middle-school students are ready for algebra, while opponents question whether the new practice will mean students are taking less-rigorous courses.
