The foundations of nine bridges or other freeway structures in California that have been tested in recent years are safe, according to Caltrans, the state transportation agency. Caltrans experts conducted an analysis of testing data after the Sacramento Bee newspaper raised questions about testing processes and testing and construction lapses on the eastern span of the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. "The subject matter may be complicated, but the conclusion is simple," Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty said in a letter to members of the state Senate and Assembly transportation committees. "California's transportation infrastructure rests on dependable foundations."
