Seventeen additional medical societies contributed recommendations as part of a broad update to the Choosing Wisely campaign to reduce unneeded medical treatments. ASNC is one of the original member societies supporting the campaign. Although not selected specifically with costs in mind, the guidelines offer significant opportunity to cut spending, experts say. One 300,000-patient practice determined that simply by eliminating unnecessary bone scans and electrocardiograms, billing would be cut by $1 million annually. Extrapolated nationwide, that would mean $1 billion in savings.
