The number of Colorado third-graders with untreated tooth decay has declined over the past five years, and more school children are getting dental sealants, but many low-income children continue to have difficulty accessing dental care. Just 10% of Colorado’s dentists are considered significant providers of Medicaid services, 20 Colorado counties have no dentist who accepts Medicaid and only 16% of dentists say they will accept additional Medicaid patients. Some dentists say low Medicaid reimbursement rates and high administrative burdens keep them from taking Medicaid patients, and some may be concerned about their ability to treat very young patients.
