Hospice patients with end-stage heart failure have an average of 12 symptoms, but the most severe were not always the ones that prompted the most distress, according to a study in the Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing. University of South Florida researchers said the most severe symptoms included difficulty breathing while lying flat, lack of energy and pain outside the chest, while those causing the most distress were weight gain, sleeping problems and palpitations.
