A Illinois school board recently approved a plan to eliminate exclusive gifted-education programs for elementary- and middle-school students and to raise academic expectations across the board for students in math and language arts. Some board members raised concerns about the effect these changes will have on struggling students, but others maintained it's the right move. "We must expect more from our kids in this highly competitive, dynamic world that we're catapulting them into," said board member Marty Turek.
