Researchers looked at the records of 1,600 veterans with chronic heartburn who were prescribed proton pump inhibitors and found that a majority were given more than a three-month supply of these drugs and almost 25% were prescribed high doses. Data also showed that a majority of the veterans on high doses were still taking the drug two years after the first prescription without any reduction in dose. The study appeared in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
