Although French-language proficiency is on the decline in Haiti, instruction in most Haitian classrooms is conducted in French. Now, there is growing support for educating the country's children primarily in Creole -- the language of choice for most. "We have lost, we have wasted, so many Einsteins because of the language barrier," said Michel DeGraff, a leading Creole scholar and Haiti-born linguistics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
