Two Maine elementary schools are mixing math with physical education as part of an increased focus on mathematics and overall academic goals. At one school, third-grade students chase one another on scooter carts in a "cops and robbers" game that includes counting play money. At another school, students participate in indoor bowling, counting their score down from 150 into negative numbers. "We call it 'math movement,' for lack of a better phrase because that's what we're doing. We're combining math skills and movement skills," said teacher Scott Colby at Williams Elementary in Oakland.
