To help students meet the demands of the Common Core State Standards, educators should make classes more rigorous -- rather than focus on remediation -- veteran principal Carol Burris asserts. Co-author of "Opening the Common Core: How to Bring All Students to College and Career Readiness," Burris bases her approach on her own research and says it has proven successful at the school where she is principal, South Side High School in Rockville Centre, N.Y., where nearly every student takes advanced classes, including English-language learners and students who receive special-education services.
