A discrepancy between an increase in the number of students taking honors math and low scores on national math tests administered in 12th grade prompted the U.S. Department of Education to take a closer look at the transcripts of 18,000 students. Students enrolled in advanced math classes may not be doing advanced work, the review showed. Agency officials say the study is limited in scope, noting the sample represents only 80% of students and reviewers did not directly observe material covered in individual classes.
