A group of oil companies is urging lawmakers to eliminate the Renewable Fuel Standard, citing an industry-funded study's findings that the RFS and Renewable Identification Numbers have pushed up gasoline costs. Bob Dinneen, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, disputes that assertion, saying that "RINs are free" but what "makes them expensive is the way they are traded among the oil companies." The cost of increased RIN prices "shouldn't be passed on to consumers," said Dinneen, adding that the only thing the oil companies need to do "is comply with the RFS."
