A study of almost 500 children showed that approximately 90% of those with two copies of a genetic variation on chromosome 17 who also had experienced wheezing during colds were diagnosed with asthma by age 6. The researchers were unsure of how the gene variation and wheezing increase the risk of asthma. The findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
