Genie Barton of the Council of Better Business Bureaus is the top enforcer for the Digital Advertising Alliance's AdChoices program, and she says critics of the self-regulatory effort should stop griping. AdChoices is a robust program backed by the regulatory powers of the Federal Trade Commission, Barton says, and fills a niche that federal regulators would otherwise lack the resources to monitor. "Given how limited government resources are, everyone benefits by having self-regulation," she says.
