The rising popularity of messaging applications such as Line, WhatsApp and WeChat is irritating carriers that once relied on text messages for revenue, Evelyn Rusli writes. Social nets such as Facebook are not pleased, either, because every minute of messaging is one spent off the network. Facebook and Deutsche Telekom are among the companies buying or buying into messaging-app companies such as Beluga and Pinger, and Samsung is rumored to be interested in ChatOn, Rusli writes. In order to monetize, messaging apps are experimenting with revenue streams, including deals with carriers and selling of virtual currency "stickers."
