Starting in April, Kellogg's and Kashi boxes will include the How2Recycle label, with detailed information about the recyclability of the packaging. Kellogg is joining 11 other companies, including Minute Maid, Clorox, Costco and Seventh Generation, in GreenBlue's Sustainable Packaging Coalition.
The General Mills Bakeries and Foodservice division said sales in schools and convenience stores are outpacing industry averages. "In the education channel, the K-12 breakfast occasion is expected to grow at double the overall channel growth rate of 2%," said General Mills senior vice president Dave Dudick. "And on colleges and universities, the collective purchasing power of students is $76 billion and rising."
The International Cocoa Organization will host a workshop on cocoa certification June 24-27 in Cameroon. "There is still great uncertainty as to whether certification provides a clear benefit to cocoa farmers," the organization said. "The workshop intends to give both sides of the certification argument the chance to put their cases to rest and find ways to narrow the differences between them."
Hershey president and CEO John Bilbrey told investors China is the company's "number one international priority," with a compound annual growth rate of 84% in the last five years. "We're placing a big bet on China and anticipate it will be Hershey's number two market behind only the U.S. over the coming five years," he said.
Hershey has created a 21st Century Cocoa Plan that describes what the chocolate company will do to help farmers create more sustainable cocoa to meet growing demand. "This is a watershed moment for our industry to work together with cocoa growing nations to increase opportunities for farmers through better training, financing and community development," said president and CEO John Bilbrey.
