Lactose intolerance is not a food allergy, although many people mistakenly believe it is and needlessly avoid certain nutrient-rich foods, writes dietitian Pam Stuppy. Rather, the condition deals with a deficiency of lactase, the enzyme involved with breaking down lactose. Stuppy says people should test their tolerance for dairy products, because smaller quantities may not trigger a digestive reaction. Those who are very sensitive may want to consider using lactase pills.
