Pittsburgh's Veterans Affairs hospitals are adding "mixing valves" to showerheads and faucets for $10 million in an effort to deter another Legionella outbreak like the one in which 21 patients became ill and five died in 2011 and 2012, officials said. The Pittsburgh VA will spend an additional $750,000 to pinpoint areas of stagnant water that could be sources of Legionella, they said. In addition, the hospitals' protocol for addressing possible pneumonia cases has been updated to determine whether Legionella is involved.
