Primary care organizations increasingly are working with public health agencies and groups to improve patient care and reduce costs, said Lloyd Michener, M.D., Duke University's chair of community and family medicine. He is helping to develop the Practical Playbook for Integrating Public Health and Primary Care, a Web-based resource that will offer tools and strategies on integrated models for improving population health. The AAFP has a working group studying integrated care to suggest ways that physicians can work with public health officials.
