Babies 4 months and older who have successfully tolerated a few nonallergenic solid foods, such as carrots and bananas, can begin to try foods with higher allergy rates, such as those made with wheat, which contains gluten, according to American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology guidelines. Some data show that introducing gluten between 4 and 6 months of age is optimal for infants with a family history of celiac disease or type 1 diabetes, writes Tamara Duker Freuman, who provides ideas for introducing potential allergens.
