Researchers looked at antibiotic use at long-term care facilities in Ontario and found that nearly 78% of 66,901 elderly residents were given a course of antibiotics in 2010 and almost 45% of those prescriptions were to be taken for more than a week. The findings suggest that many elderly residents in long-term care facilities are taking antibiotics longer than necessary. The study appeared online in JAMA Internal Medicine.
