Transplanted stem cells with silica nanoparticles can be tracked with ultrasound imaging, according to a study from Stanford University. The method could be used to monitor where the cells go and whether they are effective, according to a study in the journal Science Translational Medicine. The nanoparticles did not interfere with the cells' growth rate or ability to differentiate in the lab. Human trials could be three years away.
