Vanderbilt University researchers said data from more than 3,000 bedside percutaneous dilational tracheostomy procedures performed in its ICUs showed there were few complications. The study, reported in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, involved the use of a protocol for the procedure that includes a designated procedure nurse, a checklist with "time out" and use of extra-long tracheostomy tubes for obese patients.
