Reducing faculty compensation to save money at universities and colleges is not the answer, writes Frank H. Wu, chancellor and dean of the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Cutting salaries would mean many faculty would leave for better-paying jobs, while the quality of education would decline, as would enrollment, Wu writes. Instead, faculty at his school have increased their workload and are engaging more with students. "Together, but only together, we can change higher education," Wu contends.
