Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., praised the FDA's decision to block generics of the painkiller OxyContin's original version. "With more than 16,000 Americans dying from opioid drug overdoses each year, [FDA] Commissioner [Margaret] Hamburg's announcement is a significant step forward in the federal government's effort to reduce opioid drug abuse and protect consumers," the lawmakers said in a statement. "Our hope is that FDA builds upon this decision to promote patient safety and prevent further abuse of opioids."
