The American Chemistry Council's Energy Efficient Foam Coalition is emphasizing the importance of flame retardants, as two building code proposals could reduce their use in foam insulation. These chemicals help "protect occupants and workers from fire-related death and injury, and owners and occupants from property loss," the coalition said. "[T]he current fire testing requirements in the International Residential Code for foam insulation are indispensable," an EEFC spokesman said.
