Accountable care, which provides financial incentives for health care providers to lower care costs and improve quality, is slowly gaining ground under the Affordable Care Act, with about 4 million Medicare enrollees covered by 428 accountable care organizations nationwide. Advocate Health Care, a pioneer in accountable care in Oak Brook, Ill., has decreased the number of hospital admissions by 6% and lowered the average length of stay using coordinated care, quality control measures and performance report cards.
