In order to meet 2012 budget reductions, the Air Force is cutting 1,000 of what it calls "surplus employees," a reduction that is not connected to additional funding cuts from sequestration. Voluntary reductions have helped the Air Force get closer to its target, "but we still have a way to go in placing the number of surplus employees to funded vacancies, and [reduction in force] authorities will enable us to achieve that goal," said Brig. Gen. Gina Grosso, the director of force management policy for the Air Force.
