"Enhancements such as adding fiber, whole grains or protein to a product are good for our consumers and good for our business, as demonstrated by increased sales," President and CEO John Bryant said.
Weis Markets has released its first corporate-sustainability report, showing a 15.5% cut in carbon emissions over five years, reduced electricity and landfill usage and the opening of a store with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. "We have always been a responsible and earth-conscious company," President and CEO David Hepfinger said. "But over the past five years, we have significantly upgraded our sustainability program."
Shoppers want a seamless experience with integration that allows them to easily shift from shopping in store to browsing and purchasing online or with a mobile device, according to research by Accenture. "Seamlessness is a tall order for most traditional retailers," said Chris Donnelly, global managing director of retail. "In many cases, we have found a significant gap between consumer expectations and reality, but we believe seamlessness is achievable."
Unified Grocers has formed a sustainability leadership team to help the wholesaler reduce waste and otherwise improve its environmental footprint. The team has accomplished tasks including establishing a composting program and creating an internal website that seeks suggestions from associates and provides information.
Randalls and Tom Thumb stores and all pharmacies operated by parent company Safeway are offering to fill prescriptions for people who had to evacuate from areas affected by Hurricane Ike. The stores are part of the ICERx.org online network that connects pharmacists and doctors in national emergencies.
