About a third of students scored at least proficient in reading and half of students scored proficient in math on Wisconsin's annual state assessments, according to data on the four largest districts in north-central region of the state. These scores exceed state averages but are lower than previous years because of the increased rigor of the exams to reflect the state's shift to tougher standards, said John Johnson, spokesman for the state Department of Public Instruction.
