Litigation over marriage rights for same-sex couples has led the Supreme Court to consider the welfare of children being raised by same-sex parents. Some say it's unclear whether children are best served by allowing same-sex couples to marry, but the general consensus among the scientific community is that such children fare similarly to those raised by heterosexual parents. The American College of Pediatricians, one of the only professional medical organizations to speak out against marriage equality, has a few hundred members, far fewer than the 60,000-member American Academy of Pediatrics, which supports marriage equality.
