Palliative care is relatively new and will become more important as the elderly live longer, but are burdened by pain, stress and vulnerability, says Dr. Richard Besdine of the American Federation for Aging Research. He cites five misunderstandings about palliative care: that it is the same as hospice, means giving up, requires patients to forgo other treatments, will be achieved without palliative care consultations and shortens life expectancy.
