Taking advantage of the fact that some parts of the genome express themselves nearly the same way in different organisms, bioengineers are working to produce a kind of language that can be used to program biological cells. This would allow for manipulation of gene expression, what researchers at the International Open Facility Advancing Biotechnology call "the layer between the genome and all the dynamic processes of life." The hoped-for result is an open-source language that would effectively allow programming of the way bodies behave.
