Chemical Waste Management will pay fines of $311,000 over 72 chemical spills that occurred at a California toxic-waste landfill and weren't reported to state officials, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control said. Most of the spills, which happened over the past four years, involved about a pint of chemicals and posed no evident health risk, the department said. The company is looking to expand the landfill, and the department will consider the spill-related infractions when deciding whether that project can take place.
