Cal.net is bringing broadband Internet service to California's mountainous Gold Country by using "white space" spectrum from unused TV frequencies to support wireless-transmission sites that each serve as many as 15 subscribers, according to the provider and its equipment supplier, Carlson Wireless. Cal.net's Ken Garnett estimates its RuralConnect service could support tens of thousands of people in central and northeastern California. Carlson said the service is one of the first of its kind for rural areas.
