Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced plans to open a biopharma hub in downtown Chicago in early 2014 to serve biotech startups and established firms. Emanuel said he wants to model the proposed Bioscience & Pharmaceutical Industry Commercialization and Innovation Center on a digital-startup co-working facility, 1871, that debuted in 2012 in the city. Emanuel made the announcement during the BIO International Convention, and some saw it as a riposte to Texas Gov. Rick Perry's invitation for Illinois businesses to relocate to his state.
