The Plaza Premium Lounge at Kuching International Airport has opened as the first lounge at this airport where anyone can pay for admittance. The lounge is located on the second level of domestic departure hall.
United's baggage-delivery program is now available at 36 airports including Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The program offers delivery within a 100-mile radius of the airport, and the fee is in addition to regular checked-bag fees. Fliers who set up delivery within a 40-mile radius of the airport can pay $29.95 for the first bag, $39.95 for two bags and $49.95 for up to eight bags.
Some airlines have backed off their previous support for a new $2.4 billion terminal at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, but Randall H. Walker, director of the Clark County Aviation Department, says expansion is critical for the local economy.
After losing $29 billion in five years, the big network carriers appear poised to return to modest profits this year. But airlines "can't keep flying if they make a little bit in the good times and lose a lot in the downturns," writes airline columnist Scott McCartney, explaining why consolidation is needed in the industry. The question is, how many airlines are needed to ensure both continued competition and consistent profits? McCartney's guess: "[T]hree big international carriers, three big discount competitors and a few niche players and startups."
Many business travelers are taking extra steps to avoid checking their bags, noting that the increasing number of delays boosts the chance that bags will be lost. Meanwhile, several carriers have started charging travelers to check extra bags.
