Cities and counties across the country are honoring 9-1-1 dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, which runs through Saturday. "The communications officers are people that have learned to do multiple tasks at the same time and do them under extreme pressure," Fremont, Neb., Police Chief Jeff Elliott said. "Every life-and-death situation that occurs is dealt with at some point by a communications officer that is expected to have all of the information and have it correct. It is a difficult job that not everyone is suited for." The Maine chapter of NENA was one of a number of groups calling attention to dispatchers' lifesaving work, highlighting the work of three dispatchers who assisted a caller trapped under a 500-pound snowmobile.
