A new type of bracket made of polyetheretherketone, or PEEK, composite could save as much as $5 million in annual fuel costs for an airline with 500 short-range aircraft, says one expert. The key to cost-effective manufacturing of such a weight-saving composite is reducing the normal manufacturing cycle from one measured in hours to one measured in minutes. "That speed, paired with the ability to recycle the material for other applications, takes us to a whole new level of processing efficiency that isn't achievable with thermosets," said Tom Kneath, director of sales and marketing at Tri-Mack Plastics Manufacturing Corp., the company that produced the brackets.
