Smart Wind, a joint venture between Mainstream Renewable Power and Siemens Financial Services, has agreed to lease areas off the U.K. coast for the purpose of developing two offshore wind farms that would have a combined capacity of up to 1.8 gigawatts, the companies said. Smart Wind's proposed Optimus and Breesea offshore wind projects will form the second phase of the 4-GW Hornsea Zone project off the coast of northeastern England. The company will apply for planning approval for the first phase in the summer.
