A study in the journal Science found the human leukocyte antigen C gene acts as a warning to alert the immune system that HIV is present. The antigen attaches small parts of the virus to the surface of an infected cell so the immune system can identify and eliminate it. The gene may help people with HIV live healthier longer and improve the development of HIV vaccines, researchers said.
