Fewer patients from North America and Europe participated in clinical trials for drug applications submitted to the European Medicines Agency in 2011 than in 2010, according to an EMA report. Just more than 31% of clinical-trial participants were from the European Economic Area and Switzerland, 31.5% were from North America, and 37.3% were from Africa, the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific region and Central or South America. In comparison, 26.4% of clinical trial patients were not from a European or North American country in 2010.
