A bill unveiled by House Republicans would allow energy exploration in waters close to the U.S.-Mexico maritime borders. "Congressional approval of this agreement will provide much-needed certainty to U.S. energy companies that are interested in leasing and developing these areas but up until now have been unable to," said Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., one of the bill's co-sponsors. The region contains up to 172 million barrels of oil and 304 billion cubic feet of natural gas, according to U.S. government estimates.
