Desertification is a problem around the world, but its effects are especially acute in Africa, where the Sahara desert is expanding southward. "I would blame human activity (overuse of soil, waste of water resources) and poor governance for desertification," said Oxford University geographer Troy Sternberg. Lake Chad, for example, has shrunk to just a small fraction of its former size over the past 50 years.
